NEW DELHI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — At least 10 people were killed and 28 others injured in a road mishap in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Friday, a police official said.

“The mishap happened when a speeding private minibus carrying some 40 people overturned near Valliyoor in the state’s Tirunelveli district around 5.30 a.m. (local time),” he said.

While eight people were killed on the spot, two succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital where the injured are undergoing treatment, the official said.

Preliminary probe indicated that the driver was exhausted and sleepy because of driving the vehicle throughout the night and lost its control, causing the mishap, he said.

A proper investigation has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the incident, the official added.
