India makes edible “plastic bags”

Synthesized from natural starch and vegetable oils

Xinhua Feature: To solve the problem of plastic pollution, Indian startup EnviGreen has produced “plastic bags” made up of natural starch and vegetable oils. These bags are 100% organic, biodegradable and eco-friendly. You can even dispose them of by eating it.

The founder of the company Ashwath Hegde said during an interview that he decided to look for an eco-friendly solution because of bans on plastic bags imposed by several Indian cities. He spent four years researching and experimenting with various materials, finally made an edible “plastic bag” using a combination of 12 ingredients, including potato, corn, banana and tapioca.

Although the production cost of such a bag is 35 percent higher than that of a plastic bag, it does not damage the environment and biodegrade naturally within 180 days after being discarded, and if placed in water at room temperature, they dissolve in less than a day. For quick disposal, they can be placed in boiling water, and they dissolve in about 15 seconds.
