An item based on a despatch in the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong that dismisses Western interest in the Indian tourist market as a possible substitute for the likely weakening in the Chinese market with global recessionary trends. Noting the much larger number of Chinese tourists (140 million) as against 24 million Indian ones, it also puts forward the much smaller size of the Indian middle class — at 78 million (or 158 according to some estimates), as against 400 million in China. And the fact that, with its ranking of 60th above India’s 69 (equivalent to Sierra Leonne’s), in the “Global Passport Index”, more countries extended visa-free or visa on arrival facility to Chinese tourists than to Indians.
