This piece by the Director of the China Research Center of the National University of Science and Technology of Pakistan, sub-titled “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is Pakistan’s ‘gold mine’, opening up new growth points for wealth creation in Pakistan”,  is a translation of the Pakistani original.

The CPEC is presented as the “engine” of Pakistan’s development, and its manifold benefits for Pakistan lauded unabashedly. Amongst them is a (guarded) assertion that only a small number of senior positions have been taken by Chinese ; all the rest are Pakistanis.  A total of 60,000 Pakistanis are said to have gained employment in CPEC related projects.

Extracts:

.”………..Some people with ulterior motives accuse the (CPEC) corridor construction of increasing Pakistan’s debt burden, claiming that Pakistan is in a “debt trap”. But what is the truth? According to foreign debt structure data released by the Pakistani government, the proportion of the debt attributable to the CPEC is very low, and not the cause of Pakistan’s debt problem. The Pakistani economy has begun to witness the dividends brought forth by construction of the corridor. As Pakistani people receive tangible benefits from the results (completion) of construction of the corridor, and note the positive impact on their lives, misunderstandings will slowly disappear and rumors will not sustain.

The construction of “One Belt, One Road” is continually enhancing the level of interconnectivity and communication among countries along the route, pushing common prosperity of all countries and bringing historic development opportunities to the world in a win-win cooperation. When meeting Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Xi Jinping said that it is necessary to carry out closer and pragmatic cooperation, promote economic and trade exchanges and investment, consolidate the early harvest projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and promote the expansion of corridor construction to industrial parks, social and people’s livelihood.

The construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a (matter of) general consensus in Pakistani society. The Pakistani people know that realisation of economic take-off is inseparable from the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. We look forward to welcoming more Chinese companies with capital and technology to invest in Pakistan to help foster industrialization in Pakistan.”
