The report mentions that India is seeking to lease a second ‘Akula’ class nuclear submarine from Russia. at a cost of USD 3 billion. It is expected to be delivered in 2025 and will be leased for 10 years. The term of the existing Akula class submarine leased in 2012 is to be extended till 2027, to cover the period of trials and tests etc of the newly leased second submarine.
The item notes that this is the largest Indian order for military cooperation with Russia after the signing of a $5.5 billion S-400 air defense missile system contract last year. And that this would be the third submarine leased by India from Russia, the first being a Charlie class one in 1988.
